RESISTA®, Elms with Resistance

If you are looking for a tree that is extremely adaptable and appropriate for roadsides and parks, then we can highly recommend our RESISTA® elms. At the moment we have three main varieties, each adapted for specific types of locations.

From extinction to survival

In 1958, Prof. E.B. Smalley began experimenting with growing disease resistant elms at the Madison University in Wisconsin/USA – the tree was saved from extinction. Today, Smalleys strains carry the trademark RESISTA® and are now conquering the roads, avenues and parks throughout Europe. The most popular of these is the “New Horizon” with 25,000 plantings; next in line come “Regal” with 5000 plantings and “Rebona” with 2000 plantings.

1. RESISTA® elms are tried and tested

RESISTA® elms have been planted in hundred of different locations across North America for the last 40 years and for the last 20 years in Europe. Their resistance to Dutch elm disease (Ophiostoma novo-ulmi) has been tried and tested and the trees are regularly subjected to tough infection tests with the virulent disease.

2. RESISTA® elms are undemanding

RESISTA® elms can be planted nearly everywhere: they are able to adapt to the most diverse and even extreme conditions. They flourish in nutrient- and humus poor soil, light and dry soils, as well as heavy, dense and poorly aerated soils; they also flourish in dry and sealed grounds, and in thin soils on cliffs, rocks, and gravel. Like all trees, RESISTA® elms grow best under good conditions but even in sub-optimal ones they exhibit an amazing vitality and growth rate.

3. RESISTA® elms are easy to care for

Few trees can compete with the crown of a RESISTA®-Elm. As with native sorts, RESISTA® elms have fast growing foliage, but they also have another advantage: the fruits remain small and are resistant against honeydew.

4. RESISTA® elms are Roadworthy

RESISTA® elms are stable, hardy, and wind and frost resistant. They can even bear a heavy snowfall without suffering broken branches. The trees recover easily from minor injuries to bark and trunk caused by traffic accidents.

5. RESISTA® elms are solid

RESISTA® elms are healthy, fast growing, medium-sized trees. Within five years they can increase their trunk circumference from 14 – 16 cm to 30 cm or more. Depending on variety and location they develop a conical to wide crown with upright branches and main stem going straight through to the top. RESISTA® elms are extremely tolerant of adverse conditions in city centres.

6. RESISTA® elms are resistant

RESISTA® elms are cultivated from the roots. They are not grafted. This insures that they are resistant to Dutch elm disease (Ophiostoma novo-ulmi). The high resistance to the disease is continually tested together with the Federal Institute for Plant Diseases in Darmstadt. The cultivation from root also insures against trunk lesions at the point of grafting that often becomes noticeable many years later.

7. RESISTA® elms are trademarked

RESISTA® is a registered trademark. The varieties are protected within the EU under breeders rights and recorded into the official catalogue of varieties. Holder of these rights is the Eisele GmbH & Co KG in Darmstadt.

8. RESISTA® elms are recommend by German cities

Major German cities have worked together for many years to test the adaptability of different tree species and varieties for roadside planting. Two of the Resista® elms are recommended. One of them is ‘New Horizon’.

RESISTA® elms ‘Regal’ and the Dutch variety ‘Lobel’ have been classified as appropriate for urban roadsides. The ‘Sapporo Autumn Gold’ (previously sold as a RESISTA® elm) is no longer offered as a roadside tree because its wide spread is a cause of excessive care. This variety has been taken off the list of roadside trees. The magazine Stadt + Grün (7/2006) contains updated list of roadside trees.

9. RESISTA® elms are only available from official partner nurseries

RESISTA® elms are offered throughout Europe by selected nurseries. All young plants are produced on their own root exclusively in Darmstadt for more than 20 years. Skilled staff guarantee the highest possible quality. The young plants of about 4 years of age are given to the partner nurseries for growing until they reach an adequate size to go to the consumer.
